What is Project Notouch?

Project Notouch is Arduino custom game controller. It is inspired by DodecaLEDron by

What is the goal?

The goal is to create unusual game controller and game. We will share tutorial how to create your own controller too.

Is there any game for Notouch?

There is of course! It is called Rocketmorph. It is infinite space runner with neon inspiration which gets faster and faster (don’t get dizzy!). It was developed for Ludum Dare #35. You can play it via web browser or standalone Windows version and control it by keyboard or gamepad as we promised. We ran it also on Android however it is still in the preparation.

Why do we do it?

We want to explore new possibilities of interaction between players and nontraditional controller. We want to find out how such controller can influence gamedesign and what new possibilities it can bring.

Sensor prototypes

How does it work?

Controller is made out of sensors. All sensors consist of IR (Infrared) LEDs and IR photodiodes. IR LEDs emit infrared light, which is reflected by player’s hand. Reflected light is detected by IR photodiodes. This is how player’s hand is detected.

What have been done already?

We have created 6 sensors and communication protocol to send data from controller’s sensors to PC. We connected the controller to several games like Audiosurf, World of Warcraft or Rocket League. We are basically able to connect it to any game controllable by keyboard. We also discovered, that using the sensor as a button is not ideal because the user doesn’t have any response. We experiment with the new type of controller’s shape. We call it linear design. This controller will be able to track hand in one-dimensional space which means how much to the right or the left the hand is.

Linear design

What will be the next step?

The next step is to create first game prototypes and test the new linear design.
